On Friday, March 8, the grade crossing at Urban Avenue was officially closed temporarily to vehicular traffic. This full closure at Urban Avenue will allow construction crews to eliminate the grade crossing and construct a vehicular and pedestrian underpass that travels underneath the railroad tracks. The full elimination of the Urban Avenue grade crossing will alleviate roadway congestion on Urban Avenue, reduce noise and air pollution, and strengthen the reliability of the Long Island Rail Road. Urban Avenue is anticipated to re-open in the fall of 2019.
3TC’s Community Ambassadors to the Town of North Hempstead, Seth Sylvan and Gary Lewi, have been working diligently over the past few weeks to ensure stakeholders in New Cassel are informed of the road closure at Urban Avenue. Seth and Gary have gone door-to-door distributing flyers in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole to the “Yes We Can” Community Center, residents, local businesses and Westbury schools. This outreach is part of the LIRR Expansion Project team’s ongoing community outreach efforts to make sure businesses and residents in Expansion Project communities are kept up to date regarding construction and related detours, road closures and parking availability. 3rd Track Constructors (3TC) is the design-build contractor responsible for completing the design and construction of the LIRR Expansion Project.
