Beginning the evening of May 31st, Design-Build Contractor 3rd Track Constructors will remove the existing two-track LIRR bridge carrying the Main Line over Cherry Lane in Carle Place and replace it in a single weekend.
Beginning in the evening hours on May 31, through the early morning hours on June 3, design-build contractor 3rd Track Constructors will remove the existing two-track LIRR bridge, which carries the Main Line over Cherry Lane in Carle Place, and replace it with a new three-track bridge to accommodate the LIRR Expansion Project. The new bridge will also have a higher clearance than the old bridge, helping to reduce incidents where over-height vehicles strike the bridge, resulting in train delays.
For the past several weeks, workers have been constructing the new bridge on Cherry Lane just north of the existing span. On the night of May 31st and continuing into the morning of June 1st, the Main Line will be shut down and workers will demolish the existing bridge and haul it away. A special vehicle will lift the new bridge and roll it south to the tracks, then lower it into place in an extraordinary feat of engineering.
Once the bridge is set, LIRR will connect the existing tracks and third rail to the new tracks and third rail installed on the bridge. All this will be accomplished within one weekend, so LIRR service will be restored in time for the morning rush on Monday, June 3rd.
