Construction is underway at Mid-Suffolk Yard, where the LIRR is expanding the Ronkonkoma train storage yard and building a new employee facility to meet the anticipated increase in AM and PM Peak ridership to Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal when East Side Access opens in 2022. The expanded yard will include 11 additional storage tracks, each holding a 12-car electric train, new employee facilities and a new Traction Power substation. Mandatory Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) equipment inspections will continue to be performed at the yard. The yard will provide additional storage for the new fleet of M9 rail cars, increase connectivity to MacArthur Airport and connect Main Line customers from Ronkonkoma and points west to Grand Central Terminal.
Site work commenced in July 2018 with land clearing. The new two-story employee facility is under construction – its steel frame is complete. The new material storage facility is also under construction, with the concrete block structure 50 percent complete. Site drainage and grading continues, foundations for a new catenary lighting system is complete and two of the three retaining walls have been completed. The project is currently on schedule and within budget.
