Now in its fourth week, crews are making strong progress on the Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination project. The roadway is being lowered after the completion of utility relocation and sheet piling. The excavation of the southern approach is substantially complete.
Since the road segment closed on April 15th, Design-Build Contractor 3rd Track Constructors has:
- installed 14 pipe piles, 6,500 square feet of wood lagging, and 320 linear feet of steel sheet pile
- excavated 8,000 cubic yards of soil
- poured pile caps along 3rd Avenue
- completed retaining wall drilled piles
The portion of Covert Avenue between 1st Avenue and 5th Avenue has been closed since April 15th, when the vehicular detour plan was put into effect. The detour plan was developed in close coordination with Nassau County and the Villages of New Hyde Park, Floral Park, and Stewart Manor, and was communicated extensively to the public, local school districts, and first responders.
An alternative detour plan was developed for commercial traffic, to keep trucks away from residential streets. A robust signage plan was implemented to ensure the success of the detour plan. Businesses along Covert Avenue remain open and accessible, and the project team continues to coordinate with Chambers of Commerce.
