Excavation for Grade-Separated Roadway Begins at Covert Avenue

After several weeks of utility relocation and installation of Support of Excavation (SOE) walls, Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park has been temporarily closed and excavation for the grade-separated roadway has commenced. Construction of the new roadway under the LIRR Main Line tracks is expected to be completed in just six months, minimizing the project’s impact on the neighboring community.

Prior to closure the project team had many meetings and worked closely with the Village of New Hyde Park, Nassau County officials and the NYSDOT to develop a traffic plan to minimize the project’s impact on the community’s residents and businesses. Covert Avenue is one of eight grade crossings being eliminated as part of the LIRR Expansion project, which will add a third track between Floral Park and Hicksville and improve quality of life along the corridor.
