The LIRR is constructing a new Mid-Suffolk Train Storage Yard and a new employee facility in Ronkonkoma, which is necessary to support the planned increase in rail service with the opening of East Side Access into Grand Central Terminal. The Yard will provide additional space to store, maintain, inspect, clean, repair and service the electric train cars, thus allowing the LIRR to increase Ronkonkoma Branch service during the AM rush by almost 50 percent. This new yard capacity supports the future service plan for this branch, which includes additional westbound trains starting at Ronkonkoma. The new Yard will feature 11 additional tracks, each with capacity for a 12-car train set. This project will ultimately make travel between Long Island and New York City more reliable and comfortable for LIRR customers.
The environmental review process for the project was successfully completed in 2015 with a Finding of No Significant Adverse Environmental Impact. The design-build contract was awarded in early 2018, and construction is expected to be completed in March 2020. The Mid-Suffolk Storage Yard and associated employee facility is projected to cost approximately $128 million.
The Mid-Suffolk Yard Project would improve Long Island Rail Road Ronkonkoma Branch service when East Side Access (ESA) to Grand Central Terminal is completed.
