Work is underway on new bridges crossing over Covert Avenue, as construction of a new underpass below the tracks continues. This work follows major construction at the project, which began in April, and includes work on the roadbed and the placing of rebar on the north side of the underpass, and the installation of abutments to support the bridge that will span the future underpass on Third Avenue.
Work on the Second Avenue bridge spanning the underpass has also begun, as has construction on the LIRR bridge that will take the Mainline over the new underpass – this bridge is scheduled to be rolled in under the tracks late this summer, with the expected completion of roadway construction toward the end of 2019.
The reconstructed grade crossing at Covert Avenue has been designed in conjunction with the NY State DOT, Nassau County and the Village of New Hyde Park and will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad. The elimination of the Covert Avenue grade crossing is part of the LIRR Expansion Project to strengthen the reliability of LIRR infrastructure and to support the growth and development of Long Island and the wider region.
