On August 17, 2017, Governor Cuomo announced the commencement of construction for the redevelopment of the Pennsylvania Station-Farley Building Complex into the Moynihan Train Hall—a 255,000 square foot transit hub to be located under a new 92-foot high sky-lit train hall. The Moynihan Train Hall provides a much-needed expansion of the Penn Station complex across 8th Avenue by creating 50 percent more concourse space and new convenient access from the Farley Building to the existing train platforms that run below it. The Train Hall will provide a direct connection to the 8th Avenue Subway and for the first time ever create direct access to the train station from 9th Avenue, bringing unparalleled regional transportation options within convenient reach of the booming Hudson Yards and far West Side areas. The project also includes state-of-the-art wayfinding, information displays and amenities to improve the customer experience.
Major improvements to Penn Station are already underway, including the creation of the West End Concourse, a new passageway connecting Penn Station to the new James Farley Building. The West End Concourse opened in June 2017, with enhancements featuring new LED lighting, digital information screens, wayfinding graphics, and ceiling-mounted LED displays. The $1.6 billion project is being funded with $550 million from New York State; $420 million from Amtrak, the MTA, the Port Authority and a federal grant; and $630 million from a joint venture of developers. The new Train Hall is targeted for completion by the end of 2020.
A $5.6 billion transformation of the Long Island Rail Road is underway, the biggest slate of investments the railroad has received in decades. All told, the money will fund 100 LIRR capital projects and radically upgrade the customer experience of the nation’s second largest commuter railroad. By the time all…
