The Cherry Valley Road Bridge, built in 1871, is located in the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead and serves the Hempstead Branch. This bridge replacement project is necessary to raise the bridge structure to avoid truck strikes that cause delays on the Hempstead Branch. There were 10 bridge strikes to this bridge in each of 2015 and 2016, illustrating the need to improve the bridge’s safety and reliability for both vehicles and LIRR passengers. The bridge would be raised to accommodate a vertical height clearance of 14 feet to allow trucks to safely pass underneath. The project is currently in the design phase, which is expected to be completed by mid-2018.
