The three-bay bridge that will carry the LIRR Main Line over the Urban Avenue underpass – which is currently being built – is in its final stages of construction. Once the excavation is complete, the bridge and supporting structure will be pushed into place utilizing a system that includes eighteen jacks to move the structure into place during a double track outage during the weekend of July 20th and 21st. Roadway construction will follow in August, with expected completion of the project in September.
The Urban Avenue grade crossing is being reconstructed to accommodate a two-way grade separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the west side. Railroad Avenue will bridge over the underpass and remain connected. This reconstructed grade crossing will help to enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
The elimination of the Urban Avenue grade crossing is part of the LIRR Expansion Project to strengthen the reliability of LIRR infrastructure and ultimately support the growth and development of Long Island.
