Construction is underway at the Urban Avenue grade crossing elimination project. The road remains open to traffic and pedestrians as piles are being driven to support the excavation of what will become the Urban Avenue underpass. The excavation will be followed by the construction of a bridge that will take Railroad Avenue across the underpass and a new railroad bridge to accommodate the new Main Line LIRR third track. Once the bridges have been built and installed, the roadway will be paved and reopened. The project is expected to be completed in October, with the road reopened to traffic in August.
The Urban Avenue LIRR grade crossing is one of seven that will be eliminated along the Main Line between Floral Park and Hicksville. This reconstructed grade crossing was designed in conjunction with the Town of North Hempstead and will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad. The elimination of the Urban Avenue grade crossing is part of the LIRR Expansion Project to strengthen the reliability of LIRR infrastructure and ultimately support the growth and development of Long Island.
