The new employee facility at Mid-Suffolk Train Storage Yard, which will be more than twice the size of the current facility, is taking shape. The site work and the AC substation work continue at the 13-acre site. The expansion of the current train storage yard and construction of the new employee facility will support the planned increase in rail service for East Side Access. Construction progress includes the installation of catenary poles throughout the yard, and placement of 100,000 feet, or 83%, of the planned 120,000 feet of conduit. Underground vaults will connect all conduit runs. The entire yard will be paved during the fourth quarter of this year.
New Employee Facility
All interior walls have been completed and waterproofed, while exterior finishes are 60% complete and progressing quickly. Once the exterior walls are in place, windows will be installed.
Rooms within the facility, including offices, training rooms, and bathrooms, are being constructed, and an elevator is being installed. HVAC duct work is almost complete, and the septic system has been installed. Electric power components are being roughed in. This new employee facility will contain all the communication network infrastructure and radios for the east end of the Island.
The current facility will be demolished once the new building is completed. The new facility includes garage storage spaces to support the various departments operating out of Ronkonkoma. The south edge of the property will contain secure 50 foot by 400 foot lay down areas for LIRR Communications, Signal and Track departments to store materials.
The AC facility substation is being installed. The substation contains circuit breakers and powers everything at the yard with the exception of the 3rd rail. Once conduits are placed, they are encased in concrete and backfilled. A generator will also be installed for backup of essential power to critical and life safety systems and rail road operations.
The foundation for the DC traction-power substation will be dug in the fourth quarter of this year. The substation will include feeders to power the new yard tracks. Two rectifiers will power the yard, while a third rectifier will power the rails (this is a future project). The duct banks for the DC power for this future project are being installed under this project.
