Piles have been driven to support sound walls east of the School Street grade crossing in New Cassel. These walls enable the LIRR to build within the right of way and serve as a barrier for train noise.
3rd Track Constructors, the design-build contractor for the LIRR Expansion Project, is performing environmental abatement at a building adjacent to the School Street grade crossing.
The School Street grade crossing is being reconstructed to accommodate a two-way grade separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk. Railroad Avenue will bridge over the underpass and remain connected. This reconstructed grade crossing will help to enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
The elimination of the School Street grade crossing is part of the LIRR Expansion Project to strengthen the reliability of LIRR infrastructure and ultimately support the growth and development of Long Island.
