The LIRR and Design-Build Contractor 3rd Track Constructors (3TC) collaborated with the Village of Stewart Manor, the Stewart Manor Fire Department and Nassau County officials to ensure the traffic detour at the Covert Avenue Grade Crossing was seamlessly integrated into the Stewart Manor July 4th Parade route. The Stewart Manor Fire Department sponsors the parade, a Village tradition for 14 y ears, and features fire trucks, marching bands and a massive water balloon fight.
The Covert Avenue grade crossing in the Village of New Hyde Park is one of eight street-level crossings along the LIRR Main Line being eliminated as part of the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville. The grade crossing is being eliminated and reconstructed to provide a two-lane grade-separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk. The reconstructed grade crossing will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
The elimination of the Covert Avenue grade crossing is part of the LIRR Expansion Project to strengthen the reliability of LIRR infrastructure and to support the growth and development of Long Island and the wider region.
