2019 STEM Competition Winners 06-13-19

On Monday, June 11, the LIRR Expansion Project team was elated to honor the student winners of the project’s Spring 2019 STEM Competition. Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Viviana Russell, Mayor Longobardi of Floral Park and Deputy Mayor Pereira of Mineola joined the winners and their families for a celebration of student innovation. Leslie Mesnick, Community Outreach Manager for the project, began the event with opening remarks and unveiled the time-lapse video for the Cherry Lane Bridge replacement in Carle Place. Ms. Mesnick also surprised the student winners with an announcement that New York State Senator Anna Kaplan had congratulated the students on their accomplishments and would be awarding students with their own certificates signed by the Senator. Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Viviana Russell, representing Carle Place and New Cassel, also addressed the group: she congratulated the winners on their thoughtful ideas and praised this strong partnership between local schools and the LIRR Expansion Project.

The student participants in the competition had countless creative ideas, including installing new artwork at construction sites, implementing noise mitigation techniques, introducing eco-friendly construction methods, and many others. The winners were individually awarded certificates, and the winning posters and videos were on display for attendees. 3rd Track Constructors (3TC), the project’s design-builder, provided hors d’oeuvres from Mineola’s own Vinoco Wine Bar & Tapas Restaurant.
