LIRR Expansion Project Team Initiates Safety Incentive Program

Safety Incentive Program - 04-08-19

For the LIRR Expansion Project team, safety at construction sites and on the railroad is always a priority. To encourage a safe workplace, as well as safety-minded staff, the project team has developed a Safety Incentive Program to implement best practices.

The Safety Incentive Program is assessed through a series of regular field evaluations: inspectors are evaluated based on various safety criteria and earn points for positive safety observations; team members with the most points each quarter are rewarded for their safety-mindedness. Evan Arctander, Safety Lead for the project management team, said: “By budgeting for these safety improvements and placing a stronger emphasis on the safe completion of operations, we engender trust and prove quite tangibly that we care about the well-being of our employees, customers, and the communities which this project serves.”

The LIRR Expansion Project includes the construction of an additional track along a 9.8-mile stretch of the railroad’s heavily traversed Main Line corridor between Floral Park and Hicksville. The project also includes elimination of eight street-level grade crossings, six station renovations, new signals and switches, eight substation replacements and other upgrades to improve safety and enhance the reliability of passenger rail service.
