Construction along Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park and Mineola Harrison Garage in Mineola is ramping up, but businesses near these project elements are open! Check out http://lirrexpansion.com/open-for-business/ for more details.
The Covert Avenue grade crossing is being eliminated and reconstructed to provide a two-lane grade-separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of the underpass. This reconstructed grade crossing was designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park and will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
During the month of February, crews are performing work in Mineola, including surveys, testing, ongoing rodent control, and monitoring construction activities for noise, dust, and vibration. Specifically, crews are working on the future Harrison Avenue Garage, which, when complete, will provide 552 parking spaces:
To prepare for the construction of the foundation of the garage, sections of sheet piles, recycled steel with interlocking edges, will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support.
- Vibratory hammers will be utilized to install the sheet piles
- Pile driving activities will conclude by the end of February
- Vibration monitoring devices have been deployed to minimize disruptions.
