The new M9 Rail cars, designed and built by Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. for LIRR, are currently being tested. The new cars will replace the 1980s-era M3 rail cars: these cars feature increased seating capacity, A/C electric outlets at each row of seats, powered B-End Doors, CCTV and multimedia screens. Testing is expected to be completed by April 2019.
The new M9 rail cars will also help to expand the LIRR’s fleet capacity and allow for anticipated ridership growth with the completion of East Side Access, the LIRR Expansion Project and other system expansion projects throughout the region. They will be available the opening day of East Side Access Service.
