Pinelawn Station, built in 1895, has been modernized and improved as part of the LIRR Double Track Project – Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma. The station, on the Ronkonkoma Branch, serves approximately 100 customers each weekday.
New inbound and outbound ADA-accessible high-level platforms have been added, as have platform stairs, ramps, and shelter sheds. LED and platform lighting, audio visual paging systems (AVPS), public address speakers, LIRR telephone (“T” boxes), and security cameras have been installed. New platform accouterments and furnishings include trash receptacles, snow-melt agent storage boxes, platform bench seating and an LIRR Customer Communications System.
Double Track, in conjunction with East Side Access and the Main Line Third Track projects, will unlock this region’s true potential. LIRR can now provide better access to Brookhaven National Laboratory and Long Island MacArthur Airport; a second track gives this branch the capacity Suffolk County needs to grow, supporting transit-oriented development and encouraging smart growth near train stations.
