The LIRR is investing $120 million to repair and protect the Long Beach Branch which was devastated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. As part of this Long Beach Branch Restoration Plan, three substations (Oceanside, Oil City and Long Beach) were replaced. Substations are vital components of rail infrastructure that provide power to the trains. These substations were constructed and housed on platforms that will ensure they are protected from the risk of future flood waters. The goal of these substation restoration projects was twofold: to ensure flood waters do not damage substation functionality in the future, and to strengthen the reliability and resiliency of LIRR infrastructure. This project was completed in January 2018.
