The LIRR and 3TC project team continuously take steps to minimize construction impacts on railroad customers and neighboring residents. LIRR customers can now park in a temporary parking lot completed last week, an effort by the team to provide as much parking space as possible, while some spots are unavailable during construction. The New Hyde Park grade crossing is being reconstructed to feature a new five-lane underpass with pedestrian sidewalks. The reconstructed grade crossing will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
Ahead of the major civil work to begin in the fall of 2019, a temporary bypass road will be constructed to avoid a total shutdown of the very busy New Hyde Park Road during construction of the undergrade crossing. Additionally, a temporary surface lot to replace some of the commuter spaces lost to construction has been completed. Upon completion of the crossing elimination work, a permanent 95-space parking lot and kiss-and-ride will be constructed.
Early construction began in March 2019 with the relocation of utilities, followed by the demolition of the structure at 115 New Hyde Park Road to make room for the temporary roadway and parking. The construction of the new train bridge and underpass structure is expected to begin this fall. Additionally, a temporary firehouse has been built on S. 12th Street in New Hyde Park to mitigate the closures at Covert Avenue and New Hyde Park Road and better ensure timely access to the village’s emergency services operations– the temporary firehouse better positions equipment to respond to emergencies on the south side of the tracks.
